Lead-Off

Kiss winter goodbye; another baseball season is fast upon us. We at Hunterdon County Baseball Magazine have worked hard in the off-season to make good on our promise to bring to you, the most knowledgeable readers and the most appreciative fans, the broadest, most in-depth coverage of the places, personalities, and events that shape the greatest game on earth right here in Hunterdon County.

In the Spring ’05 edition of HCB, you will find our standard coverage of high school teams, advancement of sportsmanship, and commitment to proper field maintenance, along with the usual, thought provoking, feature stories that distinguish HCB from other publications of its kind. Most notably, we break the real story behind the demise of the Curse of the Bambino. You heard it first right here in HCB!

The NJSIAA’s continuing efforts to promote sportsmanship at all levels of scholastic competition, occupies a significant section of this year’s spring edition. Our readers can be certain that HCB will not rest until the message, the values, the cause, and the predominance of sportsmanship, above all other reasons for competitive youth sports, unfold with the same fervor and passion with which parents, coaches, league administrators, and players approach the games in which they participate.

Women’s softball takes its turn at bat, with an update from Lisa Iancin, the new Director of Softball Operations at the Jack Cust Baseball Academy in Flemington. Men’s baseball is once again ably represented by the Flemington Orioles Baseball Club, which, after a year’s hiatus in the Central Jersey-Men’s Senior Baseball (MSBL) wood bat league, returns in 2005 to haunt old nemeses in the US Over-Thirty Baseball League. Scott Bills gives us a view of the game through the eyes of a catcher’s catcher and a team leader for all to emulate.

Speaking of those Flemington Orioles, you will read about the storybook turnaround that a nucleus of those players achieved in winning the Central Division of the National MSBL Fall Classic in Clearwater, Florida last November. And, if that’s not enough to inspire you, you have only to read about the biography of Ron LeFlore, a one-time outfielder for the Detroit Tigers, as reviewed in this issue’s Retrospective Feature.

In all, you should find no dearth of hits, runs, and features to titillate your interest and coax your curiosity. As always, HCB looks forward to the coming season with great anticipation, and, like you, with the ever-abiding faith that what is good about the game far transcends the bad press that ne’er do wells and detractors might bring to it.
